Shana Grice: Was Just 19 years old.
Police condemned her, fined her, then allowed her to die?
Punished Innocence:
Shana was a young lady that was completely let down by the police, in a so-called 'caring society'?
How many more innocent lives will it take before the government start to address the injustice shown towards innocent citizens..!
Michael Lane was once arrested for grooming a 14 year old, and he had a string of harassment accusations against him. Yet he was never charged.
Trevor Godfrey a 29 year serving officer, displayed his so-called experience by issuing Shana with a warning of wasting police time..!
Denied Credibility:
This warning led to Shana being fined £90.00 and it was just a few weeks before her inevitable murder.
Godfrey has now retired.
This cavalier attitude was described by Davina James-Hanman, chair of the domestic homicide review as harassment becoming part of the norm.
What is clear is that something needs to change, before others are harmed.
The police gave their unreserved apology, yet again..!
Stalking:
Shana first met Michael Lane in 2015 at the time they both worked at Brighton Fire Alarms.
Lane unfortunately became obsessed with Shana.
When they broke up he simply refused to accept it.
And he had told a friend of his, that she would pay for what she had done.
Beyond Jealousy:
Lane started stalking her after she had resumed her previous relationship with a former boyfriend named Ashley Cooke.
Lane had even put a tracking device on her car, so that he would get messages on his phone whenever she drove it.
From the ridiculous to the sublime, Lane seemed to have no control of his own common sense.
The 8th of February 2016:
Shana had complained to the police about being stalked by Lane.
She had received unwanted flowers, and he'd damaged her car.
The 24th of March:
Lane snatched Shana's phone, and grabbed her hair.
This led to him being finally arrested on the suspicion of assault.
Unfortunately he was then later released, because that was when PC Godfrey had issued Shana with a fixed penalty notice for wasting police time!
He based this on the fact that she had not disclosed, she had once been in a relationship with Lane.
On that note, what did a past relationship have to do with anything? Assault, is assault..!
What about the stolen phone and pulling her hair, isn't that robbery with violence?
Was Godfrey obeying police rules, or his own?
The 9th of July:
Lane had managed to steal a door key, and let himself into her home.
He had watched Shana while she slept.
In fact Shana was actually awake, and had heard his footsteps, so she hid under the covers.
She could hear him breathing, standing over her in her bedroom. Could you even imagine this young girls terror?
Not long after he left, Shana had looked out her bedroom window, to see Lane walking away.
He was later arrested for theft, and given a police caution.
They told him to stay away from Shana.
The very next day:
Shana received around seven phone calls from a blocked number, including one with heavy breathing.
However the police told her that there were no further lines of enquiry they could follow, and that the case would be left on file.
So again the police had refused her any help, and couldn't even see for themselves how serious the situation had become.
Lets just hope, none of these officers ever become detectives?
A serious case of injustice.
The 12th of July:
Shana complained to the police that she had been followed by Lane.
However, the Police treated it as "low risk", and stated that the investigating officer would be made aware of it.
The 4th of August:
Shana had spotted Lane loitering outside of her home.
She had at that point confided in her friend Joann Pumphrey, that she was afraid that police would never believe her.
This she based upon the fact that she had been wrongly fined by officer Godfrey, for wasting police time.
Even though Joann was actually a witness to all of this, Shana didn't feel confident enough to report the incident to the police, because of her bad treatment by them.
The 25th of August:
Lane had waited for Shana to be alone in her home.
He then got into her house, and he slit her throat, then set fire to her bedroom..!
Shana was just 19 years old at the time of her murder, Lane was 27.
Her body was discovered by Ian Cooke, her boyfriend's father, he found Shana in her home at Chrisdory Road, Portslade, East Sussex.
Police Failures:
This case was again so repetitive whereas the police were concerned.
The fact that they had fined her at one point for wasting their time,
Shana was just a young girl, she must have felt so alone and afraid, yet she'd done nothing to deserve this treatment.
Instead of getting the help that she needed, she was shamed, and belittled.
The way that the police had treated Shana was, 'TOTALLY UNJUST'!
And if you found this hard to read, then I can confirm it was even harder to write, Shana could have so easily have been saved.
If only people would actually listen, because its very rare for anyone to ever cry WOLF..!
Shana was completely betrayed by those that dutifully should have protected her.
Two officers charged:
Officer PC Mills resigned from the police before the disciplinary hearing on the 10th of May 2019.
Mills was alleged to have failed to adequately investigate allegations of harassment and stalking.
When on the 9th of July 2016, Shana Grice had complained that Michael Lane had stolen her back door key.
He then crept into her bedroom and watched her sleeping.
Shana Grice made a further complaint on 12th of July 2016, that Lane had followed her in his car, but PC Mills failed to contact Shana Grice.
He hadn't even bothered to update her regarding the reported incident.
She received a letter a few days later stating that the case had been closed.
Her friends said that she was angry, and could not believe that the police had dropped the case.
As a result, she didn't report any further instances of him stalking her.
In fact, that was the last time she ever contacted the police, before Lane murdered her in August.
A Big Sham:
Former PC Trevor Godfrey was found guilty by a disciplinary panel in July 2019.
He was said to have committed misconduct by not investigating Shana Grices' harassment complaints.
They then concluded that he had not committed gross misconduct.
This officer of the law had issued Ms Grice with a warning for wasting police time, and then decided to take no further action against Michael Lane, who later murdered her.
Shana's parents said the misconduct charge was "a joke, and the hearing, a complete sham".
No-one in their right mind could ever disagree with that, and justice was failed yet again..!
Suggestion!
Mental Awareness:
People that break stalking laws, or consistently harass others, should be given a compulsory psychological evaluation.
This method assess an individuals behavioural patterns, personality, and their cognitive abilities.
The most common reason for this analysis is to determine psychological factors that may be inhibiting a person's ability to think, behave, or regulate their emotional functionality.
It is the mental equivalent of a physical examination.
In this way it would be easier to predict any underlying dangers inherent to any individual.
Getting on top of crime involves safety measures being the first port of call.
Given this type of legislation could have possibly saved Shana's life..?
RIP.
