British: Institutionalised Racism?

The UK:

Please Note:

What you see below is just a synopsis of these deaths.
If you're unhappy with the information, and have any updates, or pictures, please get in touch.
Relatives, and friends are very welcome to voice any legally qualifying opinions.

I have to emphasise legality due to those that have tried to close down this site.
Please do not assume that I have finished studying these cases, check back for any updates.
Thank you for your co-operation, and understanding.

Adrian McDonald.

Adrian McDonald.

Adrian McDonald:
Adrian was 34 years old, and he died on the 22nd of December, 2014.
His death occurred in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
He had continually complained of breathing difficulties.

Sgt Jason Bromley and Insp Richard Bills, of Staffordshire Police, were found to have failed in their duty of care at a hearing in September.
Mr McDonald was hit by a Taser and bitten by a police dog before being arrested.
He was put in a police van and just seven minutes later, a third officer, PC Jonathan Tench, could not get him to respond.

Alton Manning.

Alton Manning.

Alton Manning:
Alton was 33 years old, and he died on the 8th of December, 1995.
His cause of death was from asphyxia.
Alton had been restrained by officers at Blakenhurst prison near Redditch.

A coroner's jury later passed a unanimous verdict of unlawful killing.
Seven officers were suspended.
However, the Director of Public Prosecution said there was insufficient evidence to bring any criminal charges.

There is a pattern in all these contested cases, justice appears to be given, then later its snatched away?

Anthony Grainger.

Anthony Grainger.

Anthony Grainger:
Anthony was 36 years old, and he died on the 3rd of March, 2012.
At the time, Grainger was completely unarmed.
Yet he was shot and killed by a Greater Manchester Police officer in Culcheth, Cheshire, England.

In January 2014 the Crown Prosecution Service announced that they would be prosecuting chief constable Peter Fahy.
He was in violation of health and safety legislation.
A full public enquiry into Grainger's death was concluded July 2019, blaming the police.
Strangely, there is no further information involving the police officers outcome?

Aston McLean.

Aston McLean.

Aston McLean:
Aston was 27 years old, and he died on the 6th of August, 2014.
He was being chased by the police when he was suddenly struck down by an armed response vehicle (ARV).
This tragic event occurred in Reading, in 2014.
A police officer had used an incapacitating spray on Mr McLean before he fell into the path of the vehicle.

He had been seen on the roof of a shop, but immediately came down when the police arrived.
In fear of the police he decided to run and was pursued. That was When an officer sprayed his eyes.
Unable to see he ran straight in front of the armed response vehicle.

Just why an armed response vehicle was even giving chase, is very much a mystery?

Azelle Rodney.

Azelle Rodney.

Azelle Rodney:
Azelle was 24 years old, and he died on the 30th of April, 2005.
He was from London, and was shot dead by an armed officer.
His death could be described as a complete overkill as he was hit by no less than six bullets, fired by a Metropolitan Police officer.
In July 2013 a public enquiry was held into the Specialist Firearms Officer who fired those fatal shots.

Police officer Anthony Long, was found to have had "no lawful justification" for killing Rodney.
The case was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service to determine whether a prosecution should be launched.
On 30 July 2014 the CPS announced that they had made the decision to charge the officer with murder.
However, on the 3rd of July 2015 the officer was completely cleared by a jury.

Can you see the pattern mentioned many times on this site?
Given some hope of justice ... Then its simply snatched away..!

Brian Douglas.

Brian Douglas.

Brian Douglas:
Brian was 24 years old, and he died on the 8th of May 1995.
After being struck on the 3rd of May with a police baton his skull was fractured.
He had been struck by a police officer wielding a baton, during an arrest by two officers in Clapham.
A three-week enquiry was held into the death of Mr Douglas.

His friends and family have launched the Justice for Brian Douglas campaign.
A family spokesman said that the vigil had been organised to show that he will never be forgotten, and that the fight for justice continues.
Mr Douglas was a 34-year-old music promoter from Balham, south London, and he died after being rushed into hospital with massive head injuries.
The pathologist stated that the blow inflicted was the equivalent of him falling 11 times his own height onto his head.

Cherry Groce.

Cherry Groce.

Cherry Groce: Cherry was 63 years old, and she died in April 2011.
She was 37 when she was shot and paralysed by the Metropolitan Police.
They were actually searching for her 21-year-old son Michael Groce.
This was in relation to a robbery, and a suspected firearms offence.
Of whom was never charged for any robbery whatsoever.

Cherry died of kidney failure in 2011, aged 63, and in 2014 a jury inquest found that police failures contributed to her death.
However, Lee Lawrence was just 11 years old when his all this happened, and it changed his life forever.
He was actually asleep in his mother's room when he was awoken by a loud noise. Cherry had gone to investigate the noise, but moments later he heard a gunshot.
His mother, Dorothy 'Cherry' Groce, had been shot by the invading police officers, and it left her paralysed.

This sparked the Brixton Riots of 1985.
Lee now 45, remembers his mother crying out that she could not breathe.
These are words which now resonate with those uttered by American George Floyd when a police officer knelt on his neck in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
When Lee sees a police car, he gets worried and understandably nervous that he's going to be stopped.

It questions if this mans life has been destroyed, simply by institutionalised racism?

Christopher Alder.

Christopher Alder.

Christopher Alder:
Christopher was 37 years old, and he died on the 1st of April, 1998.
He was a trainee computer programmer, and a former British Army paratrooper.
A soldier no less, that had served in the Falklands War, and had also been commended for his service with the Army in Northern Ireland.
Alder died whilst in police custody at the Queen's Gardens Police Station, Kingston upon Hull, in April 1998.

The case became a cause for civil rights campaigners in the United Kingdom.
He had earlier been the victim of an assault outside a nightclub and was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary with a head injury.
His injury resulted in him becoming a little agitated with the staff.
After which two police officers then arrested him under the guise of preventing a breach of the peace.

Cynthia Jarrett.

Cynthia Jarrett.

Cynthia Jarrett:
Cynthia was 48 years old, and she died on the 5th of October, 1985.
Her death was due to heart failure, and occurred during a police search of her home.
Broadwater Farm resident Cynthia died after four policemen burst into her home during a raid on October the 5th, 1985.
Police stated that they were looking for stolen property, but found nothing!

Mrs Jarrett's death sent shock waves through Tottenham's West Indian community.
Police will tell you that the essence of surprise is involved by breaking down peoples doors.
This system should be reviewed into a softer approach, by using more officers to block escape routes.
In retrospect it would have allowed these officers time to announce and explain themselves.

Given the above, it would have inevitably caused less shock to innocent people, such as Cynthia Jarret?

David 'Rocky' Bennett.

David 'Rocky' Bennett.

David Bennett
David was 38 years old, and he died on the 30th of October, 1998.
He was a patient that had suffered mental illness for 18 years.
Davids diagnosis was that he suffered from schizophrenia.
His death enquiry concluded that he was a victim of institutional racism within the mental health services.

The incident that led to his death was due to the mental health services, and was widely known.
After suffering racial abuse from another patient in the same room, a fight occurred.
However it was only David Bennett that was removed from the room.
The resentment of being targeted for blame was understandably linked to his physical attack on a nurse afterwards.

His subsequent physical restraint included being given a dose of medication that was way above the recommended limit.
This directly preceded his tragic death.

Demetre Fraser.

Demetre Fraser.

Demetre Fraser:
Demetre was 21 years old, and he died on the 31st of May, 2011.
He was from Peckham south east London.
This incident represented the second highly suspicious death in the custody and care of West Midlands Police force.
Said by police to have jumped off an 11th floor balcony and killed himself?

This followed on from the controversial death of Kingsley Burrell.
And all these other deaths were all whilst in police custody and they included, Smiley Culture aka David Emmanuel, Kingsley Burrell and now Demetre.
Looking at Demeteres' picture, it hardly seems likely that he would be someone that would ever commit suicide.
This confident young man appears to be someone that was possibly treated badly by those interrogating him?

Derek Bennett.

Derek Bennett.

Derek Bennett:
Derek was 29 years old, and he died on the 16th of July 2001.
He was shot four times by two marksmen in Brixton, south London.
A verdict of lawful killing was returned by an inquest jury.
He was shot dead by police whilst carrying a lighter shaped like a gun.

The coroner Selena Lynch directed the jury to return a lawful killing verdict.
Mr Bennett's relatives described the jury's verdict as 'outrageous' and a 'travesty of justice'.
Its possible that Derek was completely unaware of how seriously the police would take his actions.
However, again, it quite often makes you wonder why a more softly, softly approach was not taken towards Derek.

The two officers were removed from firearm duties after Mr Bennett's death but unfortunately that will later be reviewed.
Mr Bennett had four children, and from my study I have discovered that he was a fun person to be around.
Simply because Derek had a history of psychiatric illness, it doesn't make him a bad person.
The Community Police Consultative Group for Lambeth, stated that it was 'becoming increasingly concerned' as events unfolded.

The reports of four bullets into Mr Bennett's back would appear at this time to be unjustified and unlawful, he said.
Paul Andell, the treasurer, added: 'The guidelines say use of force by the armed response teams should be proportionate'.
These early reports appear to suggest there was a disproportionate use of force!

Habib Ullah.

Habib Ullah.

Habib Ullah: Habib was, 39 years old, and he died on the 3rd of July, 2008.
He was from Slough, Berkshire, and died after a police search.
At the time of the incident he was amongst a group of friends when police did a stop and search on them in High Wycombe, 2008.
Mr Ullah, known to friends and family as Paps, collapsed and went into cardiac arrest during the search and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has not brought any charges against the officers involved.
Thames Valley Police says there is a case of 'gross misconduct' to answer.
What is unclear is witness accounts of how they had been treated, was excess force used?
It seems that their voices appear to have been omitted from the enquiries!

Jean Charles de Menezes.

Jean Charles de Menezes.

Jean Charles da Silva e de Menezes:
Jean Charles was 27 years old, and he died on the 22nd of July, 2005.
Charles Menezes was a Brazilian man, that was shot and killed by police.
His death was caused by officers of the London Metropolitan Police Service at Stockwell station on the London Underground.

He was wrongfully suspected to be one of the fugitives involved in the previous day's failed bombing attempts.
Two officers fired a total of eleven shots according to the number of empty shell casings found on the floor of the train afterwards.
Menezes was shot seven times in the head and once in the shoulder at close range and died at the scene.

RIP.
