British: Institutionalised Racism?
The UK:
Please Note:
What you see below is just a synopsis of these deaths.
If you're unhappy with the information, and have any updates, or pictures, please get in touch.
Relatives, and friends are very welcome to voice any legally qualifying opinions.
I have to emphasise legality due to those that have tried to close down this site.
Please do not assume that I have finished studying these cases, check back for any updates.
Thank you for your co-operation, and understanding.
Jimmy Mubenga.
Jimmy Mubenga:
Jimmy was 46 years old, and he died on the 12th of October, 2010.
He was regarded as a very healthy Angolan male.
His death followed a face-forward restraint in his plane seat.
He was in the process of applying for permanent UK residency when the decision to deport him was taken.
The G4s security guards are well known for forceful removal of people from the country.
These private security guards often use racist language, and inappropriate force, a report by MPs stated.
He was restrained by no less than three of these G4S security guards on a British Airways flight.
Mr Mubenga was held in a severely splinted position for a very long time.
This was conclusive proof that it was the actions of the security guards, and nothing else, which caused Mr Mubenga's death.
Joy Angelia Gardner.
Joy Angelia Gardner:
Joy was 40 years old, and she died on the 1st of August 1993.
She was a mature student, living in London, England, United Kingdom.
Joy Gardner died after being detained during a police immigration raid on her home in Crouch End.
It happened after she was restrained with handcuffs and leather straps and was then gagged with a 13-foot length of adhesive tape wrapped around her face.
Unable to breathe, she collapsed and suffered brain damage due to asphyxia.
She was placed on life support but died following a cardiac arrest four days later.
In 1995, three of the police officers involved stood trial for Gardner's manslaughter, but were all acquitted?
This should be reinvestigated, because how can you say that someone using 13 feet of adhesive tape on someones face can ever possibly be justified?
Kingsley Burrell.
Kingsley Burrell:
Kingsley was 29 years old, and he died on the 31st of March 2011.
His death came just four days after being detained by the police.
He was arrested for a disturbance at a shop in Birmingham, on the 27th of March, 2011.
An inquest was held into his death, and concluded that prolonged restraint, and a failure to provide medical help contributed to his death.
When it had concluded, no-one was held responsible for his death.
Three police officers were cleared of lying under oath at his inquest?
The family of Mr Burrell continue their fight for his justice.
How can we believe in the police when clearly many of these deaths were completely avoidable, simply by treating people as human beings, not enemies of the state?
Leon Briggs.
Leon Briggs:
Leon was 39 years old, and he died on the 4th of November, 2013.
He had been badly restrained by police officers at Luton police station.
These officers had held him in custody, under the Mental Health Act.
Leon fell ill and was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.
Six officers were initially due to be subject to a gross misconduct hearing.
This was over their Use of excessive Force and Duties & Responsibilities as directed by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
When will potential police officers start being vetted properly, and trained to treat people with care?
Leon Patterson.
Leon Patterson:
Leon was 31 years old, and he died on the 27th of November, 1992.
He was found dead in a Stockport police cell. He had lived in in North London.
Leon had been arrested on the 21 November on suspicion of attempting to steal a till from a store.
Six days later he was discovered dead in his cell having been left naked and delirious for over 20 hours.
His cell was covered in blood and he had suffered a series of seizures and vomiting fits.
NO WORDS!
SAY THEIR NAME!
Mark Duggan.
Mark Duggan
Mark was 29 years old, and he died on the 4th of August 2011.
He was shot and killed by the police in Tottenham, North London.
The Metropolitan Police stated that officers were attempting to arrest Duggan on suspicion of planning an attack.
He was suspected to be in possession of a handgun.
Duggan died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
The circumstances of Duggan's death resulted in public protests in Tottenham.
These led to conflicts with police and escalated into riots across London and other English cities.
What faith can you put in the police when so many deaths are from over reaction to every single situation.
Michael Powell.
Michael 'Mikey' Powell:
Michael or preferred 'Mikey' was 38 years old, and he died on the 7th of September, 2003.
He died at Thornhill Road police station not very far from where I myself grew up.
This occurred just after his arrest in Lozells, Birmingham.
Police officers had been called to his mother's home after a disturbance and a police car had been driven directly at him.
No less than ten West Midlands police officers were all cleared of charges relating to his death in 2006.
In 2013 the police said they were sorry to the family of Michael Powell, who died in their custody 10 years previously.
Michael had died of asphyxiation whilst in the police station.
Mr Powell's cousin, Birmingham poet Benjamin Zephaniah, stated...
We have been asking questions for 10 years, protesting for 10 years, writing letters, and poems, and statements for 10 years.
Most of all we have been collectively grieving for 10 years.
We cannot reject an apology. The best we can do is simply raise our eyebrows and say, it's better than nothing!
This family deserve so much more, and straight answers as to why their son met with such an undeserved and tragic end.
Olaseni Lewis.
Oaseni Lewis:
Olaseni was 23 years old, and he died on the 3rd of September, 2010.
He was an IT student.
Both of his hands were shackled with two sets of handcuffs and his legs were held in two sets of restraints.
His British mother told how her son had died gasping for his breath, 'I can't breathe' he said, as he was held down by 11 police officers in the UK ten years ago.
This was when he was sectioned at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham, south London.
Even after his body went limp officers just simply walked away, believing that he was faking it.
Its hard to believe the level of intelligence, when you consider how he was shackled, and the number of people restraining him?
If you consider the amount of restraints, it makes you believe that the police's over reaction was fuelled by their own fear, and completely lacked any and all logic?
Ricky Bishop.
Ricky Bishop:
Ricky was 25 years old, and he died on the 22nd of November, 2001.
He was a father of one.
His work involved him as a bodybuilding coach, and volunteer fitness trainer.
On the afternoon of Thursday 22nd November 2001, Ricky was in a car with a friend when the police began to follow them.
They were stopped on Dalyell Road, a residential area of Brixton, and apprehended by police, but not arrested.
They were then taken to Brixton police station.
Later in the evening, the police informed Ricky’s mother that he was in King’s College Hospital, and shortly after her arrival she was told Ricky had died.
His death was suspicious, and there were numerous unanswered questions. Ricky had cuts around his mouth and wrists, and injuries to his legs.
It is alleged that during his detention, drugs were pushed into Ricky’s mouth, and elaborate stories made up by the officers to justify the arrest and a violent assault of him.
Ricky’s sister Rhonda said, 'Two police officers held Ricky to the ground whilst he was having a heart attack, only then did they call for a paramedic'.
Given his condition, this requires much more investigation?
Roger Sylvester.
Roger Sylvester:
Roger was 30 years old, and he died on the 19th of January, 1999.
Roger was from Tottenham, north London.
His death occurred after being restrained by officers in a padded room at a psychiatric hospital.
He had suffered from mental health and drug problems, and was detained naked and banging on his own front door.
A High Court judge has formally quashed an inquest verdict that a mentally ill man was unlawfully killed by police.
Mr Sylvester's 70-year-old mother Sheila said: "Did Roger kill anybody?"
God would be "the ultimate judge", she added, whilst campaigners said that the black community was angered by the ruling.
Mr Sylvester's brother Bernard Renwick said, the family were withdrawing from the legal process, with a bitter taste in our mouth.
Time and time again, over restrained, and cut off from air ... This is not justice!
SAY THEIR NAME!
Sarah Lynne Reed.
Sarah Lynne Reed:
Sarah was 32 years old, and she died on the 11th of January, 2016.
She was a British prisoner waiting for psychiatric reports before a possible trial.
A woman with a history of mental health problems, but a victim of police brutality from a few years earlier.
Sarah Reed had died whilst on remand in Holloway prison.
It was later found that the denial of medical treatment had led to her death, and that she would have been unable to plead for any help.
An investigation was started into her death, as she had previously been the victim of police brutality.
Sarah was found dead in her cell at Holloway Prison, north London, on 11 January.
Met Police officer James Kiddie was found guilty of common assault in 2014 following an attack on Ms Reed during a 2012 shop-lifting allegation.
Ms Reed was found unresponsive in her cell.
James Kiddie was the subject of two previous substantiated complaints, said the Met.
One crucial question for the police force is, why didn't they kick him to the kerb, and save Sarah's life?
PC James Kiddie, 45, was caught on CCTV.
Beware if you watch this video, it will make you angry, not just at Kiddie, but those present, for not lifting a finger to help her!
It makes you feel sick to think that someone could openly do this to a lone woman.
He is seen grabbing Ms Reed by her hair, and then punching her as she lay on the floor of Uniqlo, Regent Street in 2012.
Later Kiddie was dismissed from the force, and sentenced to a 150-hour community order for common assault.
He got off very lightly, and sadly her mother because she has to suffer, knowing that her daughter was all but murdered by this idiot!
Personally I feel that if the police want to be taken seriously, then re-arrest him and charge him with first degree murder?
Its crystal clear that he had a personal vendetta against her, and its perfectly clear that he took an ultimate and unjustifiable revenge upon her, to which he should be held accountable for!
Sean Rigg.
Sean Rigg:
Sean was 40 years old, and he died on the 21st of August, 2008.
He was a British musician and music producer, who sadly suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.
His death followed cardiac arrest whilst in police custody.
Sean was actually held in a restrained position for seven minutes, which to my mind is torture!
So it doesn't take much to work out why the Police Federation, are calling for a one-year time limit regarding any disciplinary proceedings against the police.
We've all heard of the game with a 'get out of jail free card', haven't we?
And I totally agree with Sean's sister that being acquitted for restraining someone like that, is actually, 'a licence to kill'!
This incident occurred at the entrance to Brixton police station, South London, England.
And the case became a cause for civil rights and justice campaigners in the United Kingdom.
They called for 'improvement and change on a national level' regarding deaths in police custody and the police treatment of suspects with mental health issues.
Exemplification is a better way of persuading police officers from their over zealous treatment of suspects or detainees.
Mental illness is not a crime, and can often be controlled by simple understanding and care, not by bullying, and restraints!
Sheku Bayoh.
Sheku Bayoh:
Sheku was 32 years old, and he died on the 4th of May, 2015.
He had been restrained by Scottish Police officers who were responding to a call.
Sheku's family, including his sister Kadijartu Johnson and partner Colette Bell, have campaigned for justice ever since.
They believe that he was killed unlawfully, and they're not alone in these thoughts!
Given all the gadgets police have at their disposal, I wonder if they have ever considered, talking someone down?
Detectives use it all the time in interviews, so why not improve training for constables?
Never forget, we're talking about a life here, this is someones child, brother, friend.
Life is not just precious to ourselves, but also to those lives that we touch, and leave behind us when we're gone.
Saying his name, will never bring him back, but it will honour his memory, so please keep saying it?
Smiley Culture.
David Victor Emmanuel:
David was 48 years old, and he died on the 15th of March, 2011.
Better known as Smiley Culture. One of my favourite artists back then.
He was a British reggae singer and also a DJ, he was known for his 'fast chat' style.
Personal comment: He was a really great guy, and an incredible artist..!
During his relatively brief period of fame and success, he produced two of the most critically acclaimed reggae singles of the 1980s.
David (Smiley), died during a police raid on his home.
Unbelievably and I repeat unbelievably, he was said to have stabbed himself in the chest..?
His nephew had visited him a few hours before, and commented that Smiley was happy and calm.
No-one that I've ever spoken to, believes that he did this to himself, including me!
One of his singles was entitled 'Police Officer, and it was featured on 'Top Of The Pops', in 1985.
He was signed to the Polydor label, and produced his 'Tongue in Cheek' album, and the single 'Schooltime Chronicle'.
Smiley also hosted the Channel 4 television show 'Club Mix' in 1986 and 1987.
He was a major influence for later artists such as DJ Luck and MC Neat, and Roots Manuva.
Roots Manuva described Smiley as a 'Britrap pioneer'.
Smiley was the pioneer of rap music, and no-one can ever deny him this, the man was a legend!
His first single 'Cockney Translation', contained lyrics later used in schools.
They were used as an example of how immigration has affected the English language.
I'm pretty sure that I could write a book about him, so it was a real shock to hear about his death at the time.
NOTE: I have to add the following...
His death marked the reason as to why my thoughts of the police reflected, 'No Trust'.
Any institution, given all the above deaths, should be disbanded, or completely overhauled within their training methods!
SAY THEIR NAME!
I have now discovered over 1700 more police related, unjust deaths since 1990..!
Suggestion!
In mental institutions, patients that go rogue, are temporarily restrained, and then sedated.
Further reports did not disclose any fatalities due to undergoing this form of treatment.
Therefore, but clearly under advisement, It could be strongly suggested that police officers when called to these situations,
should take along a paramedic to administer any such sedative injections?
This might seem extreme, but given so many deaths caused by over zealous police officers, it may save innocent lives..!
